Hello and happy Saturday. I used to write these types of posts before, in which I literally walked you through a school day or a lesson, and I miss doing that, so that’s what we’re doing today. I will tell you what I did with my third grades on the first day of the 2019-2020 school year. Let’s get started, shall we?
Our first day of school was a Friday and we got three hours of homeroom. My kids started coming in at around 7:45am, which is when class started, and by 8:30 I had 3/4 of my class. For reference, though, I had four students total, so that meant that three of them had arrived by that time. The other kid wasn’t going to be there for another week.
I had already gotten their supplies the week before and I’d organized all of them, which was a relief. I am forever grateful for diligent parents. With that out of the way, and after going to the front gates of the school and welcoming the seniors, we got to work.
The idea that I will tell you about was taken from Christina Costa. Her handle used to be Teach Like a Girl on Instagram, but she’s changed it since. I’m sure if you look up her name, you’ll find her.
We made nameplates with cardboard, glue, and markers. Yes, that’s literally all that’s required for this. Since the plate has two visible faces, on one, we wrote our full name, and on each corner we wrote something about ourselves, for example: favorite color, favorite subject, favorite place, and favorite food. Below our names we wrote our gender (with older kids or more proficient English speakers, you can ask for their pronouns). Then on the other side, we wrote our nickname and we drew what we’d written.
I like activities that can be easily modified and that would still work in different scenarios, and I think this one fits the criteria. Because I had so few students, I got each of my kids to share what they wrote and drew on their nameplate and then we put them on their desk for the first week or so.
At the beginning of the year, I did not have class with my kids on Friday, so after homeroom I wrote them this message and we went about our day.
What do you like to do on the first day of school? Let me know in the comments below.
Love, Miss Camila
